What dice will I be rolling?
- There are six different types of dice used in D&D:
- d4 (four sides)
- d6 (six sides)
- d8 (eight sides)
- d10 (ten sides)
- d12 (twelve sides)
- d20 (twenty sides)
- The d20 is the most commonly rolled dice in D&D 5e.
When will I roll dice?
- Your GM will instruct you when to make a roll and which dice to use.
- Most rolls are for skill checks or combat (attacks).
- Often times, you will need to add Modifiers (bonuses or penalties) to a roll.
- Your Modifiers are determined by your character’s Ability Scores.
What are Ability Scores?

- Ability Scores determine how good (or bad) your character is in various areas.
- There are six Abilities: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma.
- Your starting AS (Ability Scores) are determined at character creation, but can change upon leveling up (dependent on class).
- Ability scores give a Modifier number that is used elsewhere on the sheet e.g. Skills
- These Modifiers will add to or subtract from the result of dice rolls.
What are skills?

- Skills are specific aspects of Abilities that represent how skilled your character is in a variety of actions or situations.
- Skills are bound to their relevant Ability.
- Example: Stealth is bound to Dexterity.
- Saving throws are not skills.
